On November 22, 1995, two unlikely foes instantly became best buddies who now are some of the most well-known friends in Disney movies. When you think of friendships in Disney films, the first friendship almost everyone thinks of is the friendship of Woody and Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story films. I mean, come one, they even have a song in the film called “You’ve Got A Friend in Me”?! 24 years later, Toy Story 4, the fourth and final chapter of the Toy Story franchise is coming out, so, to honor the movies’ debut this summer (June 20, 2019), let’s look at some of the most inspiring Disney friendships since Toy Story starting with Woody and Buzz!
We first met Buzz and Woody on the screen of November 22, 1995, in Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story. When Buzz and Woody first met, they were not quite friends. In fact, Buzz Lightyear was a brand-new toy whom Andy (the toy’s owner) had just recently got for his birthday. Once Woody finds out that Andy has a new toy, he starts to be suspicious. At first, he was very accepting and welcoming of this new addition to the toy box. However, this toy was different. This new toy was starting to take up the attention of Andy, thus Woody felt a little neglected. Not only did Woody feel neglected, but he also felt a little jealous. Woody was not this ‘brand-new toy, but Buzz Lightyear, on the other hand, was this cool space ranger who had lasers and claimed he ‘could fly’. As well all know, during the events of Toy Story, Woody tries to get rid of Buzz but ultimately fails as he then must rescue Buzz. While rescuing him, the two of them begin to form a long-lasting friendship which has lasted still yet to this day. We saw their friendship grow in Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3 and now we will see it again in Toy Story 4!
We first met Lilo and Stitch on June 16, 2002, in Lilo & Stitch. The two of the form a unique friendship that only comes when you have a pet. If you are a pet owner, you will understand the bond you have with your dog or cat. In the case of Lilo and Stich, Stitch is an alien or more precisely, a failed experiment known as “Experiment-626.” Both bonded well due to them both feeling neglected, lost, and were simply looking for a friend. The meet out of unlikely circumstances, but once Lilo meets her pet dog... I mean pet alien; everything begins to change for the two. By the end of the film, the two of them are inseparable and it seems as if they were friends since birth. When you can be with someone who truly gets you for you and accepts your good and bad, they are a true friend.
Just like Lillo and Stitch, Aladdin and Genie met out of unlikely circumstances. We first discovered their friendship in Aladdin on November 11, 1992. When Aladdin first meets Genie, Genie is supposed to be Aladdin’s “slave”. After all, he is a genie and whoever rubs the magic lap gets three wishes granted. After the three wishes have been granted, Genie is supposed to return to the lamp for the next thousand years or however long it takes to rub the lamp again. For those of us who have watched the film, (Spoiler alert if you haven’t), we all know that Genie eventually becomes free because of Aladdin. During the film, the two go on an adventure going from slave to friend. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.” That is exactly what Aladdin did to Genie as Aladdin was different; he did something no one ever did and showed love to Genie. He became his friend.
Timon and Pumbaa are quite literally, ‘two peas in a pod.’ They are perfect for each other and will stick by each other’s sides through thick and thin no matter what. We first met Timon and Pumbaa on June 24, 1994, in The Lion King. Timon and Pumbaa are both outcasts and nobody accepted them for who they were. When they both met, they accepted their indifferences and bonded over not being accepted. Pumbaa is shy and reserved while Timon is outgoing and energetic, but together, nothing will stop them, and they will journey the ends of the earth or well savannah living ‘Hakuna Matata’ in the ‘Circle of Life.’ They do everything together even if it is something scary like helping Simba take on Scar. If that doesn’t describe an amazing friendship, then I don’t what does.
While there are many more friendships we could talk about, these four friendships are just some of the wonderful and amazing and inspiring friendships in Disney movies. Each one of them will stick together like ‘Ohana’ ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ living a ‘Hakuna Matata’ lifestyle to ‘A Whole New World’!
